How the brain divides its work

The left brain is responsible for logical,  analytical and verbal thought while the right brain deals in emotions, images and intuition.   The two halves of the brain are inked together by the Corpus Callosum*.  Our course will help you to improve the communication between your left and right brains and be a more effective creative thinker.

Some differences between right and left brain thinking:

The article "Right Brain / Left Brain: What Is It All About? " provides a clear explanation of the underlying theory.
Left Brain Quality Right Brain Quality
• Verbal: words, symbols, numbers • Visual: images, patterns
• Rational • Intuitive
• Sequential information processing • Simultaneous information processing
• Logical deductions from information • Lateral connections from information
• Reduces situations problems into components • See the whole first, then the details
• Highly organised • Organisation tends to be lacking
• Learn by theory and analysis • Learn by doing
• Listen to what is being said • Listen to how something is being said
• Objective • Subjective

Most of us tend to be biased to right or left qualities. But we can learn to be more creative in generating ideas and solving problems by making more effective use of both left and right brain approaches to thinking. These are complimentary and the most powerful intellects make full use of them. For example, Einstein was an accomplished violinist while Leonardo da Vinci is famed for his engineering and his art.

For a creative idea to have value it needs to have practical use. The right brain can act as 'dreamer' and the left brain act as an objective critic. Switching between both thinking styles can produce ideas that are creative, innovative and practical. Note that this is similar to the style of idea generation used by Walt Disney and defined as "Disney Thinking" where ideas are developed using three different mindsets: Dreamer, Critic and Realist.
